Cyclist killed in Sophia accident

The Guyana Police Force said they are investigating the death of pedal cyclist Joseph Semple, who succumbed to his injuries following an accident along the Sophia Public Road, Greater Georgetown.

According to information, the accident occurred on Tuesday at about 18:30h when motorcar PXX 5407, being driven by a 30-year-old Pattensen, Turkeyen resident, collided with 52-year-old Semple of Section ‘C’ Sophia.

Investigations revealed that motorcar PXX 5407 was proceeding west along the southern side of the Sophia Public Road at a fast rate of speed, while Semple was proceeding west along the northern side of the road. Police said that Semple, in the vicinity of Black and White Access Road, rode across from the northern side to the southern side and ended up into the path of the car.

As a result, the front right-side bumper of the car collided with the left side portion of the pedal cycle. The impact of the collision sent Semple and his cycle flying some distance away.

He was picked up and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital in a semi-conscious state. He was admitted a patient in the Intensive Care Unit and succumbed to his injuries about 16:50h on Wednesday.
