A pedal cyclist is in a critical condition after he was reportedly struck down by a motor car along the Soesdyke Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD), on Sunday. The injured man has been identified as 50-year-old Calvin Gilkes of Soesdyke Back Road, EBD.
Based on reports received, on the day in question at about 09:00h, Gilkes was riding along the Soesdyke Public Road when it is alleged that the motor car bearing registration number PGG 856 was in the process of overtaking the pedal cyclist but instead collided with him.
As a result of the collision, the pedal cyclist fell onto the roadway and sustained injuries to his head, neck and other parts of his body.
He was picked up in a conscious condition and escorted to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was examined and transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. He was subsequently arrested and his condition is listed as stable
A breathalyser test was conducted on the driver but there were no traces of alcohol in his system. He was placed in custody as investigations continue.
