Darts champions Fitzgerald, Chandro create history in Brazil

Guyana’s darts team returned on Tuesday following a successfully campaign at the 2017 Professional Darts Corporation’s (PDC) World Championship qualifiers held in Palmas, Brazil, winning titles in the open and Mixed Doubles categories.
Led by national champion Sudesh Fitzgerald, the team which consist of; Luiz Miguel Ramirez-Merlano, Terrence Joseph, Lallchand Rambharose and Victorine Chandro returned on Tuesday afternoon at the Eugene Correria International Airport, Ogle, where along with Guyana Darts Association (GDA) President Sheik Yassen engaged in talks with media operatives.

Fitzgerald, a national champion almost a decade now, became the first non-Brazilian player to win the coveted Brasilia Professional Championship Open title; beating off the likes of Bruno Rangel (2nd), Kevin Jacob (3rd), world ranked Diego Portela (4th) and Sven Costa Schneider.
The local marksman then paired up with Chandro to claim the Mixed Doubles title before Fitzgerald teamed up with Ramirez Merlano to finish in second place of the Men’s Double category of the competition.
Yassen said during his remarks that the team did exceptionally well despite facing pressure as being visitors. He also added that he hopes this tournament can be used as a steppingstone towards getting boxes ticked ahead of the 2018 tournament.
Fitzgerald stated that the team did well despite facing numerous challenges prior to the competition and was hopeful that the relevant persons will come onboard for future assignments as the fraternity needs as much exposure and support to do well in the days ahead.
