Davion Mars takes sole lead in Pegasus Weekly Chess League

Mechanical Engineer and avid chess player Davion Mars emerged as the sole unbeaten participant in the Pegasus Weekly Chess League, after defeating Keron Sandiford in a closely contested fourth-round encounter on Monday night at the Pegasus Corporate Suites in Kingston.

Mars and Sandiford, both national players, entered the highly anticipated match with perfect records of three victories from three games. However, Mars’ superior play in the endgame secured his fourth consecutive win and moved him one point clear of the field with three rounds remaining.
Playing with the white pieces, Mars opted for the Exchange Variation against Sandiford’s French Defence. The position remained balanced for much of the contest, with neither player able to establish a clear advantage.
The turning point arrived on move 39 when Sandiford agreed to an exchange of rooks, simplifying the position into a pawn ending. Although the exchange appeared harmless, post-game analysis showed that it shifted the advantage heavily in Mars’ favour.
Mars needed only four additional moves to demonstrate the strength of his position before Sandiford resigned. The victory lifted him to four points, while Sandiford remained on three.
Despite the result, Mars believed he had missed an opportunity to decide the contest earlier.
“Annoyed by the missing 37.Rxf7, which was winning on the spot, but I am satisfied with the fact that at no point in the game Black had any initiative,” Mars said during the post-game analysis.
Both players had prepared carefully for the contest after emerging from the third round as the competition’s only players with perfect records.
Elsewhere, artist and business owner Ryan McKay defeated Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Jessica Callender to move to three points and retain third place.
Odinnie Reece climbed into fourth place after defeating the tournament’s youngest player, Sachin Beharry. Reece now has 2.5 points.
Oluwadare Oyeyipo also moved up one position following his victory over Martin Poon. He joined Reece on 2.5 points and occupies fifth place.
Veteran player and banker Raymond Sookdeo received a forfeit victory and moved two places into seventh, while entrepreneur Jaden Taylor defeated Owen Mickle to climb two positions into eighth.
Annastaysha Marcano secured her first point of the season through a forfeit win over Juliana Persaud.
After four rounds, Mars leads with four points, followed by Sandiford and McKay on three. Reece and Oyeyipo have 2.5 points, while Callender, Sookdeo, and Taylor are on two points each.
The league will now pause until October 5, as organiser FIDE Master Anthony Drayton and two participants prepare to represent Guyana at the Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan from September 14 to 29.
