As part of its development for 2017 Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) is presently laying two concrete pitches to be utilized for training during the rainy season as well as extra training for the youth players.
The initiative is that of Ricky Deonarain, Vice President of the Guyana Floodlight Softball Cricket Association (GFSCA), who stated at the launch of Guyana Sofball Cup six that it was the next project to be undertaken subsequent to the annual event.
The cost for the finishing product is being facilitated by GFSCA and DCC. However, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) contributed at the earliest stage of the initiative.

“As you could see here this afternoon DCC is on the move to have their concrete (training) facility in place. This is an initiative that would have started some time ago with contribution from the WICB but now we have started to get it moving in collaboration with DCC and GFSCA,” said Alfred Mentore the President of the Club.
Speaking on the club’s behalf he said he is grateful for anyone, who spend their money in a corporate way for social development more so GFSCA, who have become more like a household name or family to DCC and has already also contributed in a very tangible way with the erection of permanent lights at the ‘home of the legends’ as DCC is known.
In addition, Mentore is seeking permission from the Georgetown Mayor and City Council to build a housing and storage facility adjacent to the concrete practice strip.
Meanwhile, DCC Head Coach Garvin Nedd said it was a wonderful gesture by the two entities and as coach he is very grateful. “It’s a wonderful gesture on behalf on the club and GFSCA. Definitely we know that the weather pattern is difficult throughout the course of the year so definitely this would serve me as coach in challenging season.”
The strips which are located on the eastern part of the venue will be measured at the regular pitch length with an extended cleared area for the bowlers. It will also be built above the usual flood level to accommodate training in the raining seasons.
