DDL/Michael Parris U16 and Junior Boxing Championships return on June 5
The sixth edition of the Demerara Distillers Limited-sponsored Michael Parris U16 and Juniors Championships is set to return to the National Gymnasium on Sunday, June 5.
This competition is held annually by the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) in honour of the country’s first and only Olympic medallist. Parris won bronze at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow.
Last held in March at the Andrew ‘Six Heads’ Lewis Gym in Albouystown, Forgotten Youth Foundation boxer Michael Greenidge was a cut above his peers in the 47–49kg category, forcing the referee to stop the bout against Jaydon King in the first round.
Berbice Jammers had walked away with the Best Gym title following the performances of Curtis McDonald, Travis Sancho, Aubrey Austin, Javar Jones and Marcus Humphrey.
With the Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors tournament set for August, GBA president, Steve Ninvalle, has promised that, along with the help of DDL under their Pepsi brand, the tournament would be a regular feature, since it plays an important part in identifying Guyana’s representatives for the prestigious championship.
