De Souza, Charles confident of Lady Jags’ chances

Members of Guyana’s senior women’s football team are pumped up and ready for the remainder of their CONCACAF Women’s Qualifiers next month. So much so, that they have been proudly sharing their experiences in the Guyanese team with regional and international media.

Kayla De Souza

In a sit-down with Sportsmax’s Maria Ramharack during an “In Case You Missed It” segment, Captain of the Lady Jags, Kayla De Souza shared on her decision to represent the Golden Arrowhead.
“I wouldn’t change this decision for the world,” De Souza said.
She added, “Repping Guyana specifically is special, because not only am I repping my family but I’m repping a nation that truly deserves recognition and we’ve made that very clear over the last 10 years, playing at the international level.”
When quizzed about Guyana’s campaign thus far, which consists of two wins over Dominica and Nicaragua, De Souza highlighted that it is a great position to be in, but the work is not yet done.
“Coming on top of the group was our main priority as any team’s would be. In order to progress into the summer, we need to come top of our group,” the Lady Jags Captain explained.

Otesha Charles in action for Guyana

Taking into account the team’s recent performance, training and capabilities, De Souza figures that Guyana can draw out success from this situation.
“I think anything can happen and just based on our training camp in our last round, I really think that we can move forward. Being with the team since 2009, I have to definitely say this is one of the strongest groups that have been participating in these competitions,” De Souza told Sportsmax.
She further stated, “Not only do we have a strong XI, but we have depth on our bench which adds to our ability to win and look to advance for sure.”
Meanwhile, Otesha Charles caught the attention of BBC London, with whom she sat down for an interview.
The forward, citing her performance in Guyana’s recent games, believes that the team and herself are ready for the big leagues.
“After playing that game, I thought I could take on a couple Arsenal defenders, why not? So, to play in the World Cup, I’m ready,” she declared.
After being questioned about Guyana’s potential, Charles oozed with confidence, sharing that Guyana positively have what it takes to go all the way.
“Most definitely, I am so excited. Like we have a very good chance at qualifying in this round. To play in the World Cup, that’s like a dream for any footballer, female or male,” Charles told BBC.
She added, “It’s definitely on the cards for Guyana.”
