…as Police intensify probe
The 47-year-old paramour of murdered coconut farmer Deonarine (only name), also known as “Russian”, of Grant Maria’s Delight, Lower Pomeroon River, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) remains in Police custody, along with three men, as the investigation intensifies.

Deonarine, 73, was shot dead at his home on Friday last by a masked man.
Police Public Relations Officer Jairam Ramlakhan told Guyana Times on Monday that Police questioned the 47-year-old woman, who witnessed the incident and who also gave Police the name of an individual who was employed by the now dead man, as the person she suspected to have killed her lover. The other two men in custody were also reportedly employed by the man.
This newspaper was told that the woman’s story seems to be suspicious, as her statements changed after further questioning.
This publication was told by a source that the woman, who initially said that she did not see the individual who shot her lover, is now claiming that she saw the person. Sources indicated that she also amended her original statement that the person ran down the stairs in pursuit of the coconut farmer.
It was reported that on Friday evening about 18:30h, the coconut farmer had just returned home after collecting his paramour, when he heard someone knocking on his door. Guyana Times was told when Deonarine opened the door, a masked man with a gun was standing in the entrance.
His paramour reportedly told the Police that after seeing the gunman, she attempted to grab the gun, but he whipped out a knife, which she also grabbed.
This publication was then told that the woman was pushed by the suspect who ran after the pensioner and shot him to the left side of his abdomen before making his escape.
The badly injured farmer was rushed to the Oscar Joseph District Hospital in Charity, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
This newspaper understands that the now dead man was a re-migrant, who returned to the Pomeroon and invested significant sums in the coconut industry. He was managing and living alone on the coconut estate.
Residents in the area said that Deonarine was a very kind person and expressed shock at the incident.
“Surely the killer came to kill and it’s not a robbery,” a neighbour said.
