CWI Colonial Medical Insurance Regional 4-day Tournament…
At the end of day two, Guyana Jaguars still maintained the upper hand in their CWI Colonial Medical Insurance Regional 4-day match against the Leeward Islands Volcanoes, being played at the Sir Viv Richards Stadium in Antigua & Barbuda.
Resuming the day on 210-4, Jaguars pressed on to post 388 all out, thanks to solid batting performances from Christopher Barnwell, Raymon Reifer and Devendra Bishoo.
Volcanoes ended the day trailing by 263 runs, after they managed 125-5 in 39 overs. Overnight in the middle are Jahmar Hamilton and Jacques Taylor, who will look to get some runs when they resume batting in natural light today.
In their pursuit of the Jaguars score, the Volcanoes lost opener Montcin Hodge for 13 to debutant Nial Smith when the score was 27. Kacey Carty was the next to fall, when Keon Joseph struck in the 17th over to take the score to 44-2. Carty got 7 runs on the board before he was caught by Barnwell.
The experienced Kieron Powell (34) and Devon Thomas (13) did well to rebuild the damage with patient batting that saw them capitalizing wherever possible. However, the new, refreshing pace of Smith and Barnwell did well for Jaguars, as the combined efforts of these bowlers wiped out the Leewards top order with just 28 overs on the board.
After Thomas and Powell had fallen, it was up to Hamilton and Taylor to rebuild the innings, Jaison Peters having offered no assistance, as he was clean bowled by Barnwell. Taylor and Hamilton, the last recognized pair for the Leeward Islands, dug deep and produced a resistant 40-run partnership, despite the troubling bowling of Nial Smith.
In the end, the Leeward Islands were saved by the rain, the batmen rushing off the field with hopes of making the most of the day light.
Bowling for the Jaguars, Nial Smith returned figures of 3-29, Christopher Barnwell 1-12 and Keon Joseph 1-34.
Earlier, at the commencement of day two, Barnwell pushed the furthest past the half century mark for his team, but was unfortunately dismissed for 82. His resolute knock lasted for 106 balls, and was laced with 9 fours and a six.
He received good support from all-rounder Raymon Reifer, who was dismissed 3 runs shy of a half-century. Reifer’s 47 was part of the 111-run partnership he shared with Barnwell. Following Reifer’s dismissal, the Volcanoes had a moment of joy when batsmen Anthony Bramble (1) and Veersammy Permaul (4) were removed 4 deliveries apart.
However, Bishoo played an aggressive innings down the order to rock back the Volcanoes. His score of 40 came from 34 balls and included 3 boundaries and as many maximums. Bishoo’s quick scoring was ideal, because he had only a few partners left by the tail to try pushing the Jaguars’ scoring into the 21st century.
Volcanoes’ Damion Jacobs ended with 4-89, Kezron Archibald had 2-2, and Quinton Boatswain bagged 2-73.
The penultimate day bowls off at 14:00 hrs today.
