Home Letters Demerara Harbour Bridge traffic needs to be better managed
Dear Editor,
There is urgent need for all those responsible for the traffic situation at the Demerara Harbour Bridge to review the current situation and come up with a plan to correct the situation.
For some time now, during rush hour in the mornings and afternoons, there is a build-up of traffic coming from the Vreed-en-Hoop end, resulting in chaos, confusion and long delays. While some drivers join the line and wait their turn to cross the bridge, some come from behind and bore right up in front, and Police ranks present there behave as if there is nothing they can do about that.
Sometimes there is no Police presence, and drivers are allowed to do as they wish.
This situation obtains in the evenings for traffic coming from the Houston end. There is always a build-up of traffic for no reason.
Almost daily, one would notice a high level of lawlessness among drivers, and the Police seem incapable of dealing with the situation.
I am urging the Police Commissioner and subject Minister Robeson Benn to take control of the situation immediately, and let some order and decency return to our roadways. Many persons lose quite a lot of time waiting in traffic which could be better managed.
There is need to review the entire situation and come up with ways to make everyone abide by the rules of the road. This is simply a situation of bullyism by drivers and incompetence on the part of the traffic ranks.
Yours truly,
L Simpson
