Action in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF)/Stag Super 16 Year-End Tournament rang in the new year with new champions as Den Amstel defeated the home team, Buxton United, to capture the title at the Buxton Community Centre Ground.
It was expected that the Buxtonians, playing on home turf, would have the upper hand against Den Amstel, but things did not go according to plan as the visitors won 2-0.
Both sides searched in vain for first blood during the first 45 minutes of play, but
Buxton United’s defence began to wither as the clock continued to tick.
However, both teams continued to attack, and Den Amstel gained the lead two minutes into the second half, compliments of the in-form Jamal Harvey.
Needing an equaliser, Buxton upped the ante and switched gears pushing Den Amstel’s defence to the limit with a boisterous crowd behind them.
The home team proceeded to make two substitutions in the 77th minute, but those did not help the situation. Things then took a turn for the worse in the 85th minute as Jamar Horrigon plunged the team’s hard work into the drain when he conceded an own goal to leave the team and the fans in utter shock.
From there on, it was easy work for Den Amstel, who then calmly made it to the regulation time whistle against a now dejected Buxton United.
Meanwhile, in the third-place showdown, the Fruta Conquerors brushed aside Western Tigers 2-0, as Nicholas Mc Arthur scored his team’s only goal in the 61st minute and Western Tigers Raphael Edwards’ own goal in the 75th minute handed Conquerors the victory.
