Telecommunication giant Digicel, in partnership with the Guyana Squash Association (GSA), on Monday
launched the annual Senior National Championship, which is set to serve off on June 29.
Officials of Digicel and the GSA met at Digicel’s head office in Kingston where information pertaining to the tournament was divulged to the media.
Set to run until July 3, the competition is set to attract the country’s top squash players, with action set for every evening at the Georgetown Club squash courts.
According to president of the GSA, David Fernandes, several overseas-based players are set to compete in the Men’s category, which is expected to be the showpiece of the event.
Among the top overseas-based players set to take the courts are former national champion Kristian Jeffrey and Alexander Arjoon.
The tournament will also feature a strong Women’s category with the likes of Ashley Khalil and the Wiltshire sisters, as well as the junior players preparing to compete in the Caribbean Junior Championship later this year.
There are six categories to be contested; Men’s Open, Women’s Open, Novice, Veteran Men’s 35-49 years, Veteran Men’s Over-50 and Veteran Women’s.
Meanwhile, Digicel has been sponsoring the tournament since 2014, and according to Communications Manager, Vidya Bijlall- Sanichara, the partnership has been a rewarding one for both parties.
She said the company will once again pump a substantial amount into the tournament, as it is keen on supporting events that promote sport and youth.
The Digicel Senior Championship is the flagship event on the Guyana Squash Association’s annual calendar of events.
