Digicel’s Squash tourney concludes in exciting fashion

– Arjoon, Khalil, cop national singles titles

The Guyana Squash Association Senior Championship, in partnership with Digicel concluded on Sunday at the Georgetown Club Facility with Alex Arjoon and Ashley Khalil copping the senior Men and Women Squash titles.

Arjoon claimed the title by defeating former champion Kristian Jeffrey 6/11, 11/9, 11/6, 11/3; during the semi-final round he held off a challenge by Jason Ray-Khalil, Jeffrey, winning 11/8, 11/7, 12/10.

Ashley Khalil secured her maiden national title after crushing Akeila Wiltshire 11/4, 11/7, 11/8. Khalil’s final berth was due to   defeating Larissa Wiltshire in the first semi-finals 11/7, 11/5, 11/8 while Wiltshire outplayed Taylor Fernandes 11/9, 11/5, 9/11, 11/7 in the other match

The Women’s Classic Plate title and Men’s Classic Plate Accolade went to Victoria Arjoon who defeated Rebecca Low 11/4, 11/2, 11/3 and Regan Pollard clinched the following in a walkover win over Ben Mekdeci, respectively.

The Men’s Veterans Division, Javed Alli defeated Medhi Ramdhani 11/3, 11/8, 8/11, 11/4 and Robin Low 11/6, 11/3, 11/7 while Garfield Wiltshire brushed aside Joe Mekdeci 11/9, 11/9, 11/8 and Douglas De Groot crushed Robin Low 11/6, 11/8, 11/2.

Overall, Garfield Wiltshire was crowned the Veteran 35-49 and Veteran Over-50 champion. Alli and Ramdhani finished second and third, respectively in the Veteran 35-49 section while Mekdeci and Low secured the second and third positions correspondingly in the Over-50 division.
