Digital libraries can transform quality of education delivered – Minister

…as country’s 1st e-library launched

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the North Georgetown Secondary School (NGSS) on Wednesday marked the occasion with the commissioning of a multimillion e-library— an innovative project which is the first of its kind within the school and the country.

This significant achievement for the educational institution was applauded by Education Minister Nicolette Henry, who was at the time delivering the keynote address at the opening ceremony.
In her address, Henry said that through the implementation of e-libraries in schools across Guyana, the quality of education delivered can be improved.
According to the Education Minister, libraries, specifically in the digital form, play a pivotal role within the education sector, which includes the eradication of illiteracy and creating a greater access to information for students.
The facility stands at the cost of $10.5 million, and was made possible through the contributions of the NGSS committee of past students both locally and internationally along, with other partners including the Education Ministry.
The e-library can accommodate 25 students at time, who can access learning information (past papers, textbooks) from the devices, which is situated in a specialised area at the school.
Coordinator of the school’s 50th anniversary committee, Rear Admiral (retired) Gary Best revealed plans to expand the access which will see students being able to use personal devices to access information anywhere in the school’s compound and at home.
“This entire e-library, the concept was birthed from a recognition by pass students that the school’s going to celebrate 50 years…It’s a three-phase project, phase one is accessing information in this repository for 25 students, phase two is accessing the information anywhere in the school on a dial-in on a tablet owned by the student, and phase three is accessing information from home”.
