The 56th Ministry of Education, Guyana Teachers’ Union National Schools Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships opened in emphatic fashion with a surprising finish in the 10K road race which saw District 6’s Delroy Leitch giving Corentyne an early victory in the first event of the championships on Monday.
Seventeen athletes took to the starting line with 12 males and five females running along the course which began outside of the GTT earth station on CARIFESTA Avenue, heading up to Turkeyen and returning to finish inside of the National Park.
Leitch finished the race in a time of 35 minutes and four seconds (35m04s), edging out favourite to win, District 1’s Ricky Williams by two seconds while District 5’s Daniel Gaskin copped third, running a time of 38m35s. Ronaldo Wishart of District 11 (39m22s) and Samuel France of District 10 (39m24s) completed the top five for the males.
Leitch, speaking with Guyana Times Sport, said that the race was challenging having face a little difficulty on the home stretch but still managed to finish strong.
Meanwhile, the female category saw District 5’s Vaneia Hemerding beating out her competitor for first place in 49m10s. Alicia Marks of District 1 took home second in a time of 49m38s and District 10’s Niocy Anthony raced to third in 52m32s District 6’s Sarswattie Matading finished in fourth (65m19s) as the females earned 10, eight, six and five points respectively.
Monday also featured the schools cycling championship in the National Park and will continue today at the National Stadium, Providence with the opening ceremony set to commence at 10:00H which will immediately be followed by the highly anticipated clash of the Districts in the Track and Field events at the same venue
