Coomacka upset Topp XX, H&L Winners Connection blast Hi Stars
The Coomacka Mines unit scored an unlikely win when they defeated Topp XX 2-1 in the Divine Entertainment Summer Super Cup football tournament played at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground in Linden on Sunday last.
The highlight of the night’s play, however, was Haynes and Lewis Winners Connection humiliating the Hi Stars by inflicting on them a resounding 7-0 defeat.
By virtue of their upset win, Coomacka have set up a deciding clash against Eagles United to decide the lone qualifier that would emerge from Group ‘A’ for semifinal action.
Eagles United and Coomacka Mines have each gained wins against Topp XX in their group play of this twelve team championship, which has four groups.
The writing was on the wall as soon as Coomacka, through Lionel Peters, scored the opening goal of the game in the first run-down in the opening minute, but Topp XX responded in kind, and by the 6th minute were able to even things out, with Shawn Daniels netting to make it one-all.
Scores remained unchanged at half time, and the second half tussle was decidedly an erratic encounter until the deadlock was broken five minutes before the end, Coomacka’s Cassie Campbell tilting the scales in favour of his side in the 85th minute to make it 2-1.
In the Group ‘C’ clash between Haynes and Lewis Winner Connection, Winners Connection needed to score big to increase their chances of reaching the final four when they faced Hi Stars.
They flipped the entire script on their opponent as the Connection crew’s rampage was spearheaded by doubles from Errol Davis in the 14th and 22nd minutes and Shaquille Frank in the 40th and 62nd minutes, together with single strikes by Akeem Caesar in the 42nd, Ravon Haynes in the 62nd, and Malaki Todd in the 86th minutes of play.
The action will continue today when Eagles take on Coomacka and Hi Stars battle Capital FC.
