Suriname Spartans to battle Berbice Super Squad

The much talked about DJ Stress’ Champions T20 Cup set for Sunday September 11 at the Albion Sports Complex Ground in Berbice is gathering momentum as many big names have already confirmed their participation. Additionally, a team of cricketers who are either Guyanese or Surinamese but are currently plying their trade in the Dutch speaking nation will travel from Paramaribo to battle a Berbice Super Squad XI in the day’s opening fixture from 16:00 h

The main event at 20:00 h pits together a galaxy of international stars under the night sky in the ancient county. Among the big names is legendary West Indian cricketer Shivnarine Chanderpaul who will be sponsored by Dave’s West Indian Imports for the day’s event.

Dave’s West Indian Imports will also sponsor talented former Guyana U-19 batsman Akshay Homraj, who now resides in the USA.

The 20-year-old right-hander played for Guyana U-19s in 2013 & 2014 and says he is excited to return home and once again play at Albion, a club he represented when he lived in Number 48 Village, Corentyne. He now plays in New York.

Promoter Paul ‘DJ Stress’ Bonar says he is amazed by the excitement stirring in Georgetown disclosed that many from Demerara are already planning their trip to the Corentyne coast to be part of the excitement.

“The drive from Georgetown to the Berbice River Bridge is just 90 minutes while it is about another 15 minutes to get to the ground. So it is a day and night of fun away from Demerara” said the Promoter.

The feature match includes Guyanese Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan, the pair of former West Indies Captains who will line up alongside overseas stars including Darren Sammy, Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran, Jason Mohamed, Andre Russell, Rovman Powell, Rayad Emrit and Kieron Pollard.

The internationals will be contented with the local talents of Shimron Hetmyer, Assad Fudadin, Gajanand Singh, Veerasammy Permaul, Davendra Bishoo, Jonathon Foo, Anthony Bramble and Gudakesh Moti who will also be aiming to light up the night sky. Meanwhile, tickets will go on sale for the one day spectacular on Friday at various locations throughout Berbice and Demerara. The cost per ticket is $1,500 while the capacity at Albion Sports Complex is 15,000.

In Berbice, tickets will be on sale at Imran and Son at Rose Hall, Imran and Daughters at Rose Hall, A. Ally and Sons in New Amsterdam and at Sham Beer Garden in Cumberland Canje. In Demerara, tickets will be at Joseph’s Music Store at Regent and King Streets and at the Avon DVD Club in the City Mall and at Uitvlugt.
