The City Council has declared that businesses have no authority to erect ‘no-parking signs’ in front or surrounding their operations, and must first ask for permission from the Mayor and City Council (M&CC).
The M&CC had made it clear in the past that businesses and private citizens must first obtain permission in writing if they propose to erect signs on the City Council’s roads, pavements, parapets and other thoroughfares.
But what about the parking lots and meters that City Hall marked out and placed on ‘declared urban roads’? Did they get permission from the Ministry of Public Infrastructure? No, they did not. So are they saying ‘do as I say and not as I do’?
Noam Chomsky, in his book ‘Imperial Ambitions: Conversations on the Post-9/11 World’, said: “For the powerful, crimes are those that others commit.”
Well, Madam Mayor, in Guyana we say, ‘What goes for Peter must go for Paul’. If you want citizens and business to obey your municipal laws, then you must first obey the Laws of Guyana.
