Doctor granted $400,000 bail for fatal accident

Three months after an accident at Bush Lot, Corentyne, Berbice, which left one dead, a medical doctor was slapped with a causing death by dangerous driving charge on Monday when he appeared at the Whim Magistrate’s Court.

Thirty-one-year-old Giresh Sadeo of Lot 196 Section B Number 78 Village, Corentyne, appeared before Magistrate Renita Singh and pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.
Police stated that on February 15, 2020, he drove motor car PXX 5165 in a dangerous manner, thus resulting in the death of Alyia Mohabir.

It was reported that on the day in question, the now dead girl and her 14-year-old sister, Aneela Mohabir, both of Number 46 Village, Corentyne, and another child, 9-year-old Roshone Mohan of Bush Lot Village, were walking along the parapet of the Bush Lot Public Road when they were struck down by the motor car driven by Sadeo.
As a result of the impact, one of the two sisters fell on a pedal cyclist while the other was flung into the air, landed on the car, and then onto the roadway.
The three injured children were picked up and rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital but Alyia was subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where she succumbed to her injuries. The other two girls were discharged from the hospital after spending a few days.
Meanwhile, in court on Tuesday, Sadeo was placed on $400,000 bail and was ordered to lodge his passport. He will return to court on June 4, 2020.
