Domestic worker charged for $5.1M jewellery heist

Senior Magistrate Leron Daly on Friday granted a Timehri, East Bank Demerara (EBD), resident bail after she pleaded not guilty to a theft charge when she appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Thirty-eight-year-old Suranie Singh of Timehri, East Bank Demerara, stood before Magistrate Daly and denied the charge which read that between May 1 and June 11, 2019, at Houston, East Bank Demerara, she stole a number of gold rings, chains and diamond jewellery to the tune of over $5.1 million, property of Deomattie Singh.
Defence Attorney, Paula DaSantos in her application for bail, told the court that her client is the only source of income for her four young children, while explaining that the stolen items were not found in Singh’s possession. She further noted that all employees of the virtual complainant have to go through a thorough security check before leaving the premises.
Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh did not object to bail being granted but asked the Magistrate to attach conditions if bail is granted.
The defendant was placed on $250,000 bail and ordered to lodge her travel documents and to report to the Ruimveldt Police Station every Monday until the determination of the case.
Singh will make her next court appearance on July 26, 2019.
