Home Sports Double-header cricket action on today at MSC
Fresh off convincing victories in their latest games, Fisherman Masters and Success Masters will clash in a heated battle when the Georgetown Softball Cricket League (GSCL) Inc 40-over round-robin tournament continues today at the Malteenoes Sport Club Ground on Thomas Lands.
In the latest action two weeks ago, Success Masters thrashed Narine Masters by 103 runs in a lop-sided contest at Everest. The victors were led by Hackeem Majeed with 64, Vijay Baljit (35) and Baldeo Muller (25) as they compiled 187 for 8 from their 20 overs before bowling out Narine Masters for 84.
Fisherman Masters replied to 133 for 3 made by RR Masters with 137 for 2 from 15.1 overs for the easy eight-wicket win. Troy Ramsaywack (76) and Dennis Mangar (36) led the chase nicely with a huge partnership that RR Masters had no answer for.
However, the game of the day saw Regal Masters turning the tables on HS Masters with a 26-run victory in challenging conditions. Regal took first strike, but were held up early on by the opposition bowling, which was led by Samuel Kingston with 3-13 from four overs. After losing their top order cheaply with Eoin Abel, Linden Lyght and Mahesh Chunilall back in the hut with the score on 46 for 3 in the ninth over, the victors got a busy 31-run partnership from Saheed Mohamed (29) and Fazleen Mohamed (21)that put them on course for the challenging total.
After their dismissal, the lower order also cashed in with cameos from David Harper (15 not out); Mahendra Hardyal (15) and Parsram Persaud (10 not out) that took them to 129 for 7 after 20 overs. HS Masters, who briefly entertained thoughts of a second consecutive victory over Regal Masters following their thrilling last-ball win the last time the two teams met in May, then ran into Gamal Seenjan and their plan vanished.
Left-arm bowler Seenjan opened the bowling and sent down his four overs consecutively for just nine runs while claiming a key wicket. HS Masters never recovered from the slow start and eventually folded for 103 off 19.5 overs. Fazleen Mohamed returned to claim 3-22 while Hardyal (3-30) and Persaud (2-23) supported admirably.
In the games today, Success and Fisherman Masters will battle on pitch number two while Narine Masters and RR Masters will slug it out on pitch number one. Both games begin at 10:00h.
Meanwhile, Regal Masters, who drew the bye this week, are leading the points table as the tournament edges closer to the play-off stage. The other Masters teams in the tournament are Albion Masters, Essequibo Masters, and Parika Masters. The round-robin Over-40 and Open tournament is sponsored by Ink Plus, Crown Mining Supplies, and Elegance Jewellery and Pawn Shop.
