Dover disappointed, but pleased with U20s’ efforts
Guyana’s under-20 men’s football team the Junior Jaguars suffered a disheartening loss on Wednesday night to Nicaragua during the CONCACAF Under-20 Qualifiers.
To add insult to injury, the 5-0 loss means the Junior Jaguars would be knocked out of contention for the CONCACAF Under-20 Championships.
The encounter with Nicaragua was favourable in the first half of the match, with the Nicaraguans being able to connect with the back of the net only once; but the second half left much to be desired from the Guyanese youngsters, as Nicaragua added another four goals to their tally in those 45 minutes.
Reviewing the performance on Wednesday night following the game, Head Coach Wayne Dover admitted it was disappointing to miss out on the victory.
“Yesterday’s loss is a disappointment. We prepare and we come to this game with the intention to win and qualify. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the results we sought,” Dover said.
Regarding the performance of the team, Dover commended the Guyanese youths on the fight they put up. The Head Coach shared, “And, you know, the lads them, all I could say is, ‘Well done! You gave a splendid effort, a 110% effort, to get to this stage’. Unfortunately, they didn’t cross the line, but we go again from here. So, ‘Well done to you, lads’.”
The CONCACAF Qualifiers were the gateway tournament not only to the CONCACAF Championships, but also the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in 2023 and the Paris Olympic Games in 2024.
