Draining works in Kwakwani continue as CDC monitors countrywide flooding
The National Task Force on Flood Monitoring through the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) on Monday said that it was working assiduously to ensure impacted communities and those likely to be impacted across Guyana are assessed and managed during this rainy season.
Reports from Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), and Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) indicate that while water has accumulated in some areas owing to heavy rainfall, the impact thus far is not significant.
The village of Rockstone in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice), however, has reported household impacts. Emergency works in Kwakwani, Region 10 have commenced to ensure drainage systems remain operational, and water purification tablets, collapsible water containers, and cleaning hampers have been distributed to some residents.
Additionally, the Hydrometeorological Service highlighted that the Region Two communities of
Karawab, Leguan, and Versailles; Region Four communities of South Ruimveldt, Grove, Friendship, Enmore, and Timehri; Region Six village of Crabwood Creek; and the Region 10 community of Coomacka all have accumulated at least two inches of water over the last 24 hours.
Persons living in those areas and their environs are urged to be vigilant and cautious as more rainfall is forecast. The Task Force, through various Ministries and agencies, is continuously monitoring locations countrywide and is prepared to render further assistance if necessary.
On Sunday, the Hydromet Office reported that a tropical wave was affecting Guyana and that significant amounts of rainfall were expected across the country.
“As the tropical wave continues its westward movement, wet conditions are likely to continue overnight and through Monday, June 6, 2022. Rainfall events may be accompanied by thunder, lightning, and wind gusts,” the Hydromet Office had said.
It said that while cloudy conditions may persist, a reduction in rainfall was expected from Tuesday. Meanwhile, the CDC is encouraging all to report any impacts to local authorities or the National Emergency Monitoring System (NEMS) at 600-7500 or 226-1114 at any time.
