Dredge owner, bandit killed during mining camp robbery

A Brazilian dredge owner and a bandit have been killed during a robbery at Marudi mining at South Rupununi in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo).
Reports are that the robbery occurred at about 18:30h on Friday evening, and dead is 58-year-old Brazilian gold miner Fredson Da Conceiaco, also known as ‘Zezong’. The dead bandit is yet to be identified.
According to Regional Commander, Superintendent Keithon King, four men armed with guns attacked the operator’s camp on Friday night to rob him. During the robbery, the miner, a licensed firearm holder, opened fire, killing one of the gunmen before he was gunned down. The other three bandits ransacked the camp before making good their escape.
King said a team of Police ranks from Lethem was sent into Marudi on Saturday morning.
Police said they received information that a few persons traversed that area earlier that afternoon, and they are alleging that those persons are suspected to be the bandits who committed the crime.
The two bodies are presently at Aishalton, waiting to be transported to Lethem as investigations continue.
