WBD fatal accident
The driver of motorcar PTT 8019 which struck and killed Bhagwandat Roopchand on Saturday morning, has been identified as his 21-year-old nephew who resides at Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara (WBD).
The dead man, who is a vendor at Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara (WCD) was reportedly making his way home when he was struck. The 21-year-old, who works at the High Court, Georgetown, was reprimanded by public spirited persons when he was pulled from the car in a drunken state.
This publication was told that the driver’s blood alcohol level at the time, was .75, which is more than three times the legal limit.
The man is currently in Police custody and will be charged with the offence of causing death by dangerous driving when he appears at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
On Saturday, the driver was proceeding north along the western side of the road when he hit Roopchand, who was crossing at the time.
The dead man’s son, Mark Roopchand, spoke with the Guyana Times and explained that there is a speed bump where his father was crossing, which would have forced the driver to stop, however, this did not happen as the man was speeding.
The man added that he was informed of the accident after which he rushed to the hospital, but saw his father dead body being taken to the mortuary.
Roopchand was rushed in an unconscious state to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was admitted, but died some 30 minutes later.
