Driver in hit-and-run accident released on bail 

The driver who is believed to be responsible for the Corentyne, Berbice accident which occurred last Saturday that left a motorcyclist dead was on Tuesday released on $300,000 bail when he appeared before a Berbice Magistrate.
Trevor Narain of Lot 55 Whim Village appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore at the Springlands court and pleaded not guilty to three charges.

It is alleged that on March 7, at Letter Kenny, the 40-year-old man failed to render assistance after an accident. He also failed to stop after an accident and failed to report an accident.
Narain was placed on $100,000 bail on each of the charges and will have to return to court on April 28. The matter has been transferred to the Whim Magistrate’s Court.

Police Prosecutor Inspector Orin Joseph told the court that the police are in the process of preparing a file to institute a causing death by dangerous driving charge against Narain.
He said that the post-mortem examination was only completed on Tuesday morning by Dr Nehaul Singh. Dr Singh gave the cause of death as multiple injuries consistent with that of a motor vehicle accident.
Last Saturday, a motorcyclist, 25-year-old Shawn Smith of Lot 17 Fingal Street, Rose Hall Town, was discovered in an unconscious state at about 23:00h with injuries to his face and body. He was taken to the Port Mourant Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention.
Joseph told the court that the investigation into the death of Smith is ongoing.
Meanwhile, as a condition for bail, Narain has been ordered to lodge his passport with the court and to report twice weekly at Whim Police Station until the completion of the case.
