The driver of the canter that caused the tragic death of garbage collector, Zameer Isfehani, is expected to be hauled before the court once he has fully recovered. This was confirmed by Police on Thursday.
Guyana Times understands that the man, who reportedly tested positive for the novel coronavirus after he was admitted following the accident, was discharged from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), and is currently on bed rest.
It is alleged that on August 4, the garbage collector was standing at the rear of a garbage truck when a speeding motor lorry bearing registration number GWW 9841 slammed into him. The motor lorry was driven by the 52-year-old driver, who is a resident of Hill Foot, Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
Isfehani suffered severe injuries to his body and died on the spot.
Police had reported that on the day of the accident, the canter driver had suffered a heart attack. However, it is still unclear whether he had the heart attack before, during, or after the fatal crash.
Subsequent to that report, this publication was informed by Police that the driver had tested positive for COVID-19, and was a patient in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the GPHC.
On Friday, Guyana Times was told by officials that once the man has fully recovered, he will be placed before the court. They said the driver’s doctor had asked that they give him some time to recover, since his health is presently unstable.
Meanwhile, Isfehani’s family said they are continuing to wait patiently to see justice prevail. (G9)
