Driver in Skeldon fatal accident remanded

The man who was driving the car which ran under a lorry on Monday morning at Number 58 Village, Corentyne, killing one of the three passengers was remanded Wednesday morning on a dangerous driving charge.
Twenty-five-year-old Navindra Premnauth, also called Avinesh, of Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, is accused of driving motor car HC 1722 in a manner dangerous to the public causing the death of Soorajine Surjraj.
Premnauth, who appeared before Magistrate Charlyn Artiga, was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
He will have to return to court on April 20, 2018 when the matter comes up again.
It had been reported that the accident occurred at Number 58 Village about 07:30h on Monday when the driver apparently fell asleep at the wheel which resulted in him losing control of the vehicle and driving into a parked lorry, GMM 9207, which was parked on the eastern parapet.
The impact sent the lorry forward about two metres, causing it to hit another lorry and move it about one metre.
The 52-year-old Surjraj, a gas station pump attendant, was at the time travelling with her mother, Khemnie Surjraj, 70, and her only child, Nesa Sukhra, 15.
They were all in the back seat of the taxi and were returning from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport after taking the pump attendant’s sister to board a flight to the US.
The car was being driven by a family friend who worked as a mechanic but was moonlighting as a taxi driver.
The car reportedly left Crabwood Creek on Sunday afternoon at about 17:00h.
