Driver jailed for 56 months on causing death charge

Minibus driver Robert Grant was on Friday jailed for 56 months after he was found guilty on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

Grant was jailed by Magistrate Judy Latchman when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

The court found the minibus driver guilty of causing the death of Keith Simon on May 23, 2016, at Garden of Eden, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

The 41-year-old minibus driver, having been charged in 2016, was granted $1 million bail after he had denied the charge.

Reports are Simon was an employee of the Guyana Sugar Corporation and a farmer of Grove Housing Scheme, EBD. On the day of the accident, he was walking along the public road heading South, when he was fatally struck by the speeding minibus driven by Grant, and which was heading in the same direction. Simon was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

During the trial, the prosecution successfully built a strong case against Grant.
