Driver jailed for collision with St Lucian Scouts

A Kingston, Georgetown, woman was on Thursday sentenced to 10 months imprisonment for driving dangerously and colliding into two little St Lucian Scouts, leaving one of them in a critical condition.

Tracy Fordyce of Cowan Street was slapped with the charges of Dangerous Driving and Breach of a One-Way. She pleaded guilty to the charges when they were read to her by Magistrate Renita Singh in Court Seven at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
According to reports, sometime around 12:10h on Tuesday, Nick Omarie Joseph, 8, and Darnell Matthews, 9, were walking along Woolford Avenue, Georgetown, under the guidance of a St Lucian adult, when they were struck by a car bearing registration PSS 1236.
The Police statement revealed that the driver had gone to a nearby school for registration but was refused entry because of her mode of dress. As a result she became annoyed and drove off in a dangerous manner, hitting the two children in the process.
Eyewitnesses claimed that Joseph was pinned in a nearby drain for several minutes before he was rescued and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he is currently battling for his life. He reportedly sustained a fractured skull and punctured lung. Meanwhile, Matthews received minor injuries and has since been discharged.
In court on Thursday, Magistrate Singh sentenced Fordyce on the Dangerous Driving charge and imposed a fine of $15,000 for the Breach of a One-Way charge.
However, after receiving the sentence, an unrepresented Fordyce expressed the desire to change her pleas but the court had already imposed its sentences.
