Driver on $500,000 bail for causing death of Linden pensioner

Twenty-seven-year old Corwin Cooper, of Lot 50 Powis Crescent, Amelia’s Ward, Linden, was released on $500,000 bail when he appeared at the Linden Magistrate’s Court on charges of causing death by dangerous driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Magistrate Dylon Bess read the charge which stated that on December 22, 2019, Cooper caused the death of 78-year-old Lindener Juliet Cornelius while driving under the influence. He was not required to plea to the charges. Reports are that the pensioner of Lot 55 West Watooka, Linden was killed on Sunday morning after she was reportedly struck down by a speeding car at about 07:15h on the Burnham Drive Public Road, Wismar.
The Prosecution is contending that motorcar PVV 2251, which was driven by Cooper, was proceeding south along the eastern side of the road at a fast rate of speed and whilst negotiating a left bend, the driver suddenly lost control of his vehicle and ended up on the southern parapet. There, he reportedly collided with Cornelius who was walking, heading west on the southern side of the roadway. As a result of the collision, the woman fell onto the roadway and received numerous injuries about her body. She was picked up by public-spirited citizens and transported to the Linden Hospital Complex (LHC) where she was admitted. The woman subsequently died while receiving medical attention.
Police said a breathalyser test was conducted on the driver and he was over the prescribed limit. He was released on $450,000 on the causing death charge and on $50,000 for the driving under the influence offence.
The case was adjourned to January 20, 2020
