Drugs, medical supplies seized in Suriname bust

…driver claims to have received items at Guyana’s “back track” route

A mixed team of Police from the West Region of Suriname arrested a 23-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl following a drug-related operation on Wednesday evening along the Awadhoesseinweg, according to information published by Boss TV Suriname.

At about 18:35h on May 27, officers conducting surveillance intercepted a vehicle transporting 24 boxes containing various types of medicines. The driver, identified by initials A M A (23), reportedly told investigators that he had received the packages from a Guyanese man near a backtrack route.
The vehicle and the suspected drugs were seized, and the driver was taken into custody.
Following the initial arrest, Police carried out a search at the suspect’s residence in the vicinity of the Awahoesseinweg, Nickerie District. During the search, officers found his partner, identified by initials TN (17), who was also arrested.
Police said they discovered 151 packages containing a pressed and dried substance suspected to be marijuana or hashish. The total weight is estimated at around 151 kilograms. The suspected narcotics were also confiscated.
Both suspects were taken to the Police station for questioning, and after consultation with the Public Prosecution Service, they were placed in custody pending further investigation.
Suriname authorities have referred the case involving the seized medicines to the Fraud Department, while the suspected narcotics case has been assigned to the Narcotics Brigade for further investigation.
