Drunk minibus driver arrested for hitting down elderly pedestrian

Police have arrested a 40-year-old man who is responsible for injuring a 57-year-old pedestrian in an accident which occurred last night along the Plantain Walk Public Road, West Bank Demerara.

At around 20:20hrs, the minibus was proceeding north along the roadway at a fast rate of speed when it collided with the pedestrian who was in the process of crossing the road.

The pedestrian, identified as Basil Persaud of Middle Street, Pouderoyen, WBD, fell onto the road’s surface and received injuries about his body.

He was subsequently picked up in a conscious state and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was seen and examined by a doctor and later admitted as a patient.

The driver was arrested and a breathalyzer test was conducted on him where his breath alcohol content was 60 and 61 micrograms which exceeded the prescribed limit.

He remains in custody assisting with investigation.
