Drunken brawl between Essequibo Coast brothers ends in murder

An Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) labourer was stabbed to death as he attempted to make peace between one of his brothers and sister-in-law who were involved in a heated argument.

Dead is 22-year-old Ganga Persaud also known as “Toney” of Fairfield, Essequibo Coast. His brother, Rameshwar Gouvai, has since been arrested and is in Police custody pending his court appearance.
Reports are that the suspect and his wife along with Persaud and their mother lived in the same house.
According to information, Persaud, the suspect and another brother who was visiting from Wakenaam were drinking at about 15:00h when their visiting brother and his wife were involved in an argument. This led to a drunken brawl.
Police have since confirmed that the suspect armed himself with a rum bottle and lashed Persaud to the head while the other relative attempted to make peace.
Both Persaud and the suspect exited the house via the front and back door, respectively.
This newspaper was told that shortly after, the suspect started shouting, “He dead! He dead.”
It was then that relatives rushed towards Persaud as he laid motionlessly in a pool of blood. When his brother examined him, he was bleeding from a wound to his left side below his arm. A neighbour along with other relatives then rushed Persaud to the Suddie Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The suspect was subsequently handed over to Police by his mother, who took him to the station on Monday morning.
