Duo invades home of pensioner, escapes with cash and jewellery

The Police are on the hunt for a male and female who invaded the home of 87-year-old Homeranie Balram of No 67 Village Corentyne, Berbice, and escaped with a quantity of jewellery and an undisclosed sum of cash on Sunday evening.
Based on information received, the pensioner of Section B No 67 Village secured her home and retired to bed at about 19:30h. However, at about 23:00h, she was awakened by the suspects who instructed her not to say anything as they ransacked the home.
After collecting the jewellery and the money, they made their way to the upper flat of the house where they made good their escape.
After realising the bandits had left, the elderly woman raised an alarm. The Police were contacted and an investigation was launched. No arrests were made up to press time.
Only last week, acting Police Commissioner Ryan Hoppie revealed that there was an overall decrease of 4.3 per cent in serious crimes committed for the period January 2020 to present when compared to the same period last year.
In addition, there was a decrease of 8.9 per cent in breaking and entering and larceny, with a 6.1 per cent decrease in burglary when compared to the corresponding period.
However, he related that the Force has seen a 27.69 per cent increase in murders for the same period.
He added that women being murdered by their spouses catered for more than a quarter of the total number. However, the Force has recorded a 71.4 per cent increase in its clear-up rate, and an 83.5 per cent increase for robbery under arms where firearms were used.
