Duo nabbed with illegal ammo hidden in air filter

Two men are being processed for court on Monday after they were found in possession of a quantity of illegal ammunition stashed away in the air filter of the vehicle they were travelling in.

The discovery was made about 16:50h on Thursday by ranks attached to the Aranka Station in F Division (Interior Locations).
It was reported that acting on information received, the ranks intercepted a motor pickup bearing registration number PHH 222, at 75 km Barama Road, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).
During a search of the vehicle’s engine area, a black plastic bag was unearthed in the air filter compartment. Further checks revealed a box containing 49 rounds of .38 live ammunition, which were unlicensed.
The articles were shown to the driver, a 29-year-old Sands Riverstone, Essequibo resident, who claimed that he was carrying same for a passenger, a 40-year-old miner of Lot 730 Charity Housing Scheme. The driver told the Police that he had hidden the ammunition in the compartment.
A confrontation was held between the two men during which the miner was questioned, but he denied the claims made by the driver.
Nevertheless, both men have been arrested and have been taken into custody pending further investigations.
Legal advice was subsequently obtained, and the two are being processed to be arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Monday.
