After a hiatus of at least a decade, the Demerara Volleyball Association (DVA) will today crown a schools champion in the county finals of the first school tournament for the new administration.
The tournament, which will serve off at 10:00h at the National Gymnasium, will see the top teams from the respective zones: West Demerara, Georgetown and Linden do battle to bring pride to their respective zones in the one day round-robin finals.
Foundation Secondary winning the Georgetown and Linden legs respectively, the tournament now sets sight on crowning an overall Demerara school champion.
The tournament has been made possible by generous support from Indesco, the primary sponsor for the Georgetown leg; Angcam Marine Supplies, who sponsored the West Demerara leg; Talk is Cheap Travel Agency, the primary sponsor for the Linden leg, and Digicel and the Guyana Volleyball Federation.
Today’s action will also see runners-up, Leonora Secondary from West Demerara, Christianburg/Wismar Secondary from Linden and Queen’s College and Marian Academy from Georgetown joining the zone champions to put on a spectacle for the fans and supporters expected to pack the National Gymnasium.
Excited by the response of the schools so far in this tournament, President of the DVA, Trevor Williams, is already talking about running off another school tournament later in the year as, Youth and School Volleyball has been identified by the association and federation as an area of focus moving forward.
Williams also pointed out that outstanding players from this tournament will get an immediate opportunity to further develop themselves in the sport because immediately after the completion of the finals, a male and female school team will start preparation to represent Demerara at the Inter-county championship scheduled for May 7 at the National Gymnasium.
Also in the pipeline for youth volleyball, the Guyana Volleyball Federation will be selecting male and female teams to represent the country at the upcoming Under-19 and Under-23 South American Championships, which are scheduled to serve off in Colombia in June of this year and the cream of the crop is expected to come from the schools participating in the ongoing school championships.
