Guyana Harpy Eagles have not gotten off to the best of starts so far in the Regional Super50, but will be keen to tighten the screws as they come up against Leeward Islands Hurricanes today.
Eagles opened with an unconvincing win over Windward Islands Hurricanes and suffered a 114-run loss to Trinidad and Tobago Red Force as they sit fifth on the eight-team table with seven points. On the other hand, Hurricanes have blown away the competition with two convincing wins in as many matches, taking away 22 points to sit at the top of the table.
Kevin Sinclair
Eagles have not produced an impactful batting performance with Chandrapaul Hemraj failing twice and Tagenarine Chanderpaul unable to convert his starts into big scores. This could mean a change in the opening combination. Like their top-order woes, Eagles have not gotten the contributions with the bat fans would expect from Shimron Hetmyer and Sherfane Rutherford, but this could be a turning point for both big hitters.
However, Tevin Imlach has shown his ability to put a value on his wicket as well as Kevin Sinclair.
Guyana’s strength has continued to rest on the bowling department; and with Sinclair supporting his captain, Veerasammy Permaul and Gudakesh Motie, the spin department is well constructed to restrict most teams. Their seam department has also international quality with Shepherd and Nial Smith as well as Rutherford, who has been impactful at times.
Quinten Sampson made his debut in the previous match and would add to both the seam department and lengthen the batting order, thus giving Permaul variety. Should the think-tank want to make any changes, it could mean Kemol Savory coming off the bench to replace Hemraj or Sampson being replaced by Ronsford Beaton to add an extra bit of pace.
At the centre of Hurricanes’ success is left-arm spinner Daniel Doram, who has 10 wickets so far in his dream run while Hayden Walsh has thrown in a valuable contribution with both bat and ball. Combined with the exploits of their skipper, Alzarri Joseph, Oshane Thomas and Rahkeem Cornwall, the bowling will be no blow-over.
With Justin Greaves, Cornwall and Walsh propping up the batting, Kieran Powell can afford to play a bit freely at the top of the order with the likes of Kofi James, Keacy Carty, and Jahmar Hamilton to come.
Meanwhile, West Indies Academy will lock horns with Barbados Pride today as well. The Academy is sitting in third with 12 points from one win and a loss while Pride are in fourth with eight points taken from their opening win victory.
