The Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry Incorporated (GBTI) has this year collaborated with Television Guyana’s “Kids today, Leaders’ tomorrow” to raise literacy awareness in Guyana.
GBTI’s Annual Early-Savers Summer Camp, which commenced on June 10, is in
full swing at the bank’s recreational facility in Bel Air Gardens, Georgetown.
Public Relations and Marketing Manager Pamela Binda told Guyana Times that the camp is a beneficial programme geared at engaging participants in educational programmes in a non-formal setting, while enlightening them on Guyana’s rich folklore.
She related that the programme incorporates two segments, a literacy session and an arts and crafts session. Participants were enthralled by local folk tales narrated by Mr. Alan Fenty, who is a renowned playwright and story teller.
Binda urges members of the public to get on board with GBTI. Who knows? You may be the next lucky participant in next year’s summer camp!
“We encourage persons out there: If you don’t have an Early Savers Account, come with GBTI, sigh up with us and enjoy the myriad of benefits that we offer
you,” she admonished.
Thirty active members of the Early Savers Club were randomly selected in two groups of 15 each, the first being between the ages of 7 and 11 and the other being between 12 and 15. The morning session is allocated for the younger group, while the latter group is engaged in the afternoon session.
Several participants spoke to this publication and expressed their delight at being a part of the beneficial summer programme.
“I really like this summer camp. Some things I’d like to learn are arts and craft, folk takes and folk songs. We also get to learn history of Guyana at this exciting camp, in the old age and in the present,” eight-year-old Akil Elcock articulated. The summer camp concludes on (Friday July 14) with a fair exhibiting artistic pieces prepared by the children during the course of the week.
