East La Penitence home gutted; allegedly caused by owner’s smoking

Two days after a fire razed a family home on Hadfield Street, Lodge, Georgetown, leaving them homeless, another fire in the city, this time at East La Penitence Housing Sewage Compound, has completely destroyed the dwelling place, leaving another family making alternative living arrangements.

The house ablaze on Wednesday

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) stated that it received a report of a fire at about 04:16h on Wednesday. As such, several tenders and firefighters responded and were able to contain the blaze, but by the time they arrived, the one flat wooden structure was completely engulfed in flames.
The building and its contents, however, were completely destroyed. The cause of the fire is suspected to have been set by the owner, who was smoking at the time. An investigation is underway.
However, the blaze on Monday is suspected to have been electrical in origin. It began at about 03:30h and quickly engulfed the upper floor of the 75-year-old wooden family home. It was reported that an 11-year-old boy was thrown through a window to safety.
