Eccles-Ramsburg embarking on transformative journey

Dear Editor,
The Eccles-Ramsburg Local Authority Area (LAA) is emerging as a testament to what visionary leadership and community collaboration can achieve. Anchored by the principles of the “One Guyana” vision under the stewardship of President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, the People’s Progressive Party is at the forefront of this national movement towards sustainable development and inclusive growth. Please allow me to highlight a few examples of the multifaceted initiatives driving the rapid progressive transformation in this vital gateway.

The Bagotstown koker door can now be opened during low tide

Since assuming office in August 2020, President Ali has championed an initiative-taking and governance model that is driving significant development initiatives nationwide. He has done so with punctuating and assertive interventions, leading teams of Government officials countrywide to complement and incentivize the efforts of the Municipal and Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) with overwhelmingly pleasing results.
With its strategic importance, Eccles-Ramsburg has been a significant beneficiary of this approach. The area is a hub of activity and a critical link connecting diverse regions and communities, facilitating the seamless movement of people and goods, and enriching the national tapestry. As a central conduit to our leading international airports, and with the situating of the current and new Harbour Bridge in this LAA, one cannot underscore its importance.
The unfolding passage targets improvements in the pivotal roles of infrastructure upgrades and drainage prioritization among other initiatives contributing to a sweeping progressive transformation of Guyana’s landscape. The general public is witnessing massive development across all the Municipalities and Local Authority Areas aligned with His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali and the People’s Progressive Party’s outstanding leadership and “One Guyana” Vision.

The Eccles-Ramsburg NDC has embraced the supporting interventions following His Excellency President Ali’s recent visit. Dynamic and dedicated community leaders, including Mr. Neil Kumar, Mr. Sean Richmond, Mr. Christopher Chan, and our councillors, are advancing a programme to sustain and propel our President’s collective vision for progress and community empowerment with overwhelmingly pleasing results. These officials are visibly performing the vanguard pivotal roles in steering the monitoring of the implementation of approved projects, and advancing visible initiatives marking a new era of resilience and connectivity for the communities in the LAA.
While understandably realizing more appreciated yields and outcomes over time, the outlined preceding framework and underpinning thought process are categorically linked, but are specific; one should therefore understand and relate to the respective context as follows:

*Infrastructure Upgrades: The Road to Resilience*
As the region’s infrastructure transformation unfolds with an eye toward sustainability and future needs, parallel upgrades in community road refurbishments and enhancements are required. The designs must support today’s use and withstand tomorrow’s challenges, incorporating flood mitigation measures and advanced construction techniques for lasting durability.

*Prioritizing Drainage Solutions: Building Resilience Against Environmental Hazards*
Understanding the critical role of adequate drainage, Eccles-Ramsburg has prioritized its water management systems to prevent or minimize community flooding in the future. Innovative and practical solutions using tyres and chains for cleaning clogged drains with complex bridge obstructions illustrate a proactive approach to environmental challenges, ensuring the community’s protection and sustainability.
The Eccles-Ramsburg NDC has prioritized drainage to recognize the importance of adequate drainage systems in safeguarding communities. The cleaning of many community drains is in an advanced stage. This proactive approach, championed by Mr. Kumar and his team of vibrant community activists, aims to mitigate the risk of flooding and improve overall environmental sustainability. The Bagotstown koker is now free of obstructive debris, and is fully functional after months of inactivity.

The Power of Collaboration: Engaging for Impact
The essence of Eccles-Ramsburg’s success lies in its commitment to collaborative governance. The active participation of local leaders, community activists and residents has created a development model that is responsive, inclusive, and efficient. In this regard, the role and response of the Eccles Community Group is most admirable. Mr. Christopher Chan’s leadership in project management epitomizes this ethos, driving projects to completion with precision and accountability. Further, there has been coordinated assistance from the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture, and the visible presence and participation of the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha, and the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Manzoor Nadir, with significant earnest.
During a recent site visit of ongoing works on Saturday, March 16, 2024, the team examined critical projects across Sections AA, BB, CC, EE, Old Eccles, and at the Bagotstown koker. The inspecting stakeholders included Ms. Jasodra Applesammy from the Regional Democratic Council of Region 4; NDC Councillors Ms. Zoreen Outar, Mr. Chaitnarine Persaud, Mr. Shantaram Seetaram, and Mr. Christopher Chan, Chair of the NDC Works Committee. Observations revealed tremendous progress in most cases, and meticulous attention to detail, with roads and drains constructed in concrete to ensure durability and longevity.

*Looking Ahead: A Vision for All Guyanese*
Eccles-Ramsburg’s journey is purposeful and mobilized, but far from over. With ongoing and future projects, including those under the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, the LAA is on stream to continue its growth trajectory. The forward-thinking approach spearheaded by Mr. Kumar and Mr. Richmond reflects a commitment to sustainable development and resilience in the face of challenges — one that would ensure advantages in our community’s transitioning while complementing the national goal of extending development benefits across Guyana with an accelerated endeavour, ensuring equitable progress and enhancing the quality of life of every citizen.

*A model of sustainable development*
The story of Eccles-Ramsburg is a testament to the realization of potential through shared vision, innovative thinking, and collective effort. As it stands on the brink of a brighter future, the LAA is transforming its own landscape and setting a standard for sustainable development across Guyana and beyond, presenting a model that could be replicated in many areas.
Central to the measured success of the development initiatives in Eccles-Ramsburg is the spirit of collaborative governance. Mr. Kumar and Mr. Richmond are pivotal in coordinating activities and fostering meaningful engagement with residents. By working hand in hand with community activists and stakeholders, they ensure that development efforts are guided by local needs and aspirations, promoting inclusivity and ownership.
Mr. Christopher Chan, with his expertise in project management, brings a strategic edge to the Works Committee. Armed with a Master’s Degree in Project Management from the University of the West Indies, Chan oversees the continuous monitoring and evaluation process, ensuring that project execution is on track with precision and efficiency. His dedication to quality control and accountability underscores the commitment of local authorities to deliver tangible results for the residents of Eccles-Ramsburg.
Future Directions: Expand and mobilize broader partnerships toward success for all Guyanese
As Eccles-Ramsburg NDC, residents and stakeholders continue the journey of positive progression, setting the stage for a community of advantages, benefits, and pride. The commitment of its leaders remains steadfast. Building on the success of ongoing initiatives such as the infrastructure projects undertaken by the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, the LAA is poised to benefit from further investments and strategic interventions. The model may be applied, since it presents a valuable mechanism for extending development efforts to all corners of Guyana, ensuring equitable access and widespread impact.
In conclusion, the rapid development unfolding in the Eccles-Ramsburg NDC serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for communities across Guyana. Through collaborative governance, innovative solutions, and a relentless commitment to progress, the LAA has laid the foundation for a brighter future for all its residents.
