ECD businessman arrested after dumping gun, ammo in trench

A 33-year-old businessman from Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was arrested on Monday for possession of an illegal firearm and several live rounds of ammunition during an intelligence-led operation.
Police stated that during the operation, ranks observed the businessman acting suspiciously, and as the ranks approached him, he reportedly disposed of an object into a nearby trench.

As such, the object was retrieved and turned out to be a 9mm pistol along with a magazine containing six live rounds of ammunition.
He was arrested and taken to the Sparendaam Police Station, where he was placed in custody pending charges.
The Guyana Police Force reported that between January 1 and November 9, 2025, approximately 100 firearms were taken off the streets. These include 57 pistols, 12 revolvers, 29 shotguns, and two rifles.
The Police also stated that of the 100 firearms seized, about 32 originated from the USA and Brazil, while 14 were from Austria and Italy, five from Venezuela, three each from Turkey and Belgium, and one from Germany.
The place of origin of the others is yet to be determined.
