ECD man electrocuted while connecting “illegal” wire to house
Thirty-year-old Mark Welles of Lot 44 Coldingen, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was on Wednesday evening electrocuted while trying to run electricity from one house to another.
Based on reports received, the man resided with his 46-year-old girlfriend, and on Wednesday at about 20:40h while at home, his girlfriend noted that Welles was in the yard running a wire to a nearby house to receive electricity when she heard him screaming.
She told investigators that she immediately rushed to see what was happening, and upon arrival, she observed Welles holding a white electric drop cord and lying motionlessly on the ground. The woman said she managed to remove the wire from his hand and observed he was unresponsive.
The dead man’s girlfriend said she then raised an alarm and persons rushed to the scene.
However, at about 20:50h, an Emergency Medical Technician from the Melanie Fire Station arrived and Welles was pronounced dead at the scene.
The body was then examined by ranks and wounds were seen to his left palm and right leg. It was later taken to the mortuary where it is awaiting post-mortem examination.
Investigations are in progress.
This is the fourth person that has been electrocuted in the year. The most recent case occurred in Buxton, ECD, in June, where a 30-year-old carpenter of Buxton was electrocuted while constructing a step.
Police reports said that Conrad Spencer was erecting the step with an electrical saw when he came into contact with a live wire.
According to the Police, the man was observed lying motionlessly next to his workbench with what appeared to be burn marks on his right elbow. (G9)
