ECD man slapped with simple larceny charge

Michael White was on Wednesday taken before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to the charge of robbery under arms.
The 48-year-old man, who hails from Lot 177 Triumph, East Coast Demerara, stood before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan to answer to the charge which stated that on April 22, 2019, at Commerce Street, Georgetown, while being armed with a knife, he robbed Jairam Setaram of a cellular phone and cash valued at $11,000.
It is alleged that on April 22, the Virtual Complainant was sitting at Commerce Street when the defendant approached him and asked for a cigarette. The man refused to give the cigarette to White, who became annoyed and cuffed the VC to his face. White allegedly took the man’s belongings and made good his escape. An investigation was carried out and the defendant was arrested by police ranks.
Police Prosecutor Ceon Black objected to bail on the grounds that the defendant is a flight risk and pointed out the serious nature of the offence. Bail was refused. The case will continue on May 15, 2019.
