The partially decomposed body of a man was found lying face down in a trench near the Victoria Centre Ground, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
According to Police, the body was discovered by passers-by about 14:30h on Friday last. Police said that they received an anonymous call claiming that someone’s corpse was floating in the trench. Upon their arrival, cops were met with the gruesome discovery.
The dead man has since been identified by his daughter as Guy Thom, 50, of Victoria Village, ECD.
According to his daughter, she last saw her father alive about two weeks ago. She said he visited her home to collect his monthly groceries and he did not complain to her about having problems with anyone in the area. She had not seen or heard from him since. She further revealed that her father suffered from health complications, including diabetes and poor eyesight.
According to Police, when the body was found, no marks of violence were seen.
In an interview with Guyana Times on Tuesday, Guyana Police Force Public Relations Officer Royston Andries-Junor, confirmed that a post-mortem was conducted on the body and revealed that the man died as a result of asphyxiation attributable to drowning.
The post-mortem was conducted by Government Pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh at the Georgetown Public Hospital Mortuary. The man’s body has since been handed over to relatives for burial.
