The Leonora Track and Field Facility, West Coast Demerara was in uproar on Friday last as the Faculty of Education and Humanities proved that their challenge for the Champion Trophy at the Inter faculty Track & Field Championship of the University of Guyana (UG) was not just talk but was able to walk the walk.
At the end of the day, the newly crowned champions had amassed a total of 238 points, comfortably ahead of second placed, Social Science with 218 points. The Berbice contingent from UG Berbice Campus was also in the mix, placing third with 161 points while Technology accumulated 143 points to secure fourth position.

The Faculty of Agriculture & Forestry on 100 points, Faculty of Earth & Environmental Sciences had 79 points, Faculty of Natural Sciences with 50 points and the Faculty of Health on 46 points. Completed the point standings.
The charge for the winners was led by the females who won their segment of the competition with the men being third in their category. The Faculty of Technology won the male segment but with no participation coming from the distaff side their overall position was fourth.
Rayon Abrams of the Faculty of Technology was crowned the sprint king with wins in the 100m, 200m & 400m while on the distaff side Kezia Bess of the faculty of Education & Humanities was crowned sprint queen with wins in the 100m, 200m & 400m. However their performances were not enough to garner the champion athlete positions with the champion male athlete being Osafa DosSantos and Fiona Mentis both of the Faculty of Education & Humanities. DosSantos gained 33 points with wins in the Discus, Shotput, was second in the Javelin and fourth in the High Jump with Mentis being victorious in the Long Jump, High Jump and placing second in the 100m and 200m.

The salute of the March Past, which was accompanied by the Corp of Band from the Guyana Defence Force, was taken by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Dr. Michael Scott, the Registrar, Nigel Gravesande and representing the defending champions was Sydney Armstrong. The Faculty of Agriculture & Forestry was adjudged the most uniformed faculty on parade with the Faculty of Social Sciences having the largest contingent. The Best Banner on parade was awarded to both the Faculty of Earth & Environmental Sciences and the Faculty of Social Sciences.
In declaring the sports open, Dr. Scott noted the historic significance of the event being hosted at the Leonora Track & Field Stadium and the opportunity it afforded the student athletes to compete in the best of conditions
The event was managed by the Athletics Association of Guyana and marked the first time the event was hosted at Guyana’s only National Track and Field Facility.
