Education Month 2026 to spotlight digital learning, TVET, drivers’ education

The 2026 Education Month activities will commence with the opening of school on Monday, including the launch of a “Driver’s Education Programme” on the Guyana Digital School (GDS) platform and the commissioning of AUTOCAD facilities at a number of schools, and will end with the hosting of an Education Awards on October 2.
The activities will also include a TVET Fair, a documentary on “60 Years of Education”, and a National Conference on Education, Innovation, and Development from September 29 to October 1.
This is according to the 2026 Education Month calendar of activities released by the Ministry of Education (MoE) on Saturday. Celebrated annually in September, this year Education Month is being observed under the theme “From Classrooms to Communities, Education Transforms Lives”.
The celebration of the event will span a number of activities across September. On Sunday, September 6, there will be the launch of the annual Sports Championships alongside a “Steps for Education Walk”. Though the activities have been listed, the calendar is yet to identify the locations or times for the various activities.
On September 9, the MOE will be launching the expansion of the GDS to include registration from Grades One – 11. The platform was initially opened to students of Grades 10 and 11 and saw over 20,000 students across the Caribbean region signing up. It was promised that the initiative would be expanded to include learners across other grade levels.
On September 11, the much-anticipated “Drivers’ Education Programme” will be launched on the GDS platform. Under this programme, Fifth-Form students in secondary schools across Guyana will, for the first time, be able to access and pursue their driving theory curriculum through the national digital school platform, enabling them to graduate secondary school equipped with essential knowledge on road safety and responsible road use.
On September 14 will be the launch of the National Education Leadership Academy (NELA) Community of Practice, an expansion to the NELA programme that was launched in December 2025. The NELA Community of Practice is a nationwide professional network established by Guyana’s MoE. It is designed to extend the reach of the NELA academy, allowing current and aspiring school leaders to collaborate, network, and exchange knowledge peer-to-peer.
The TVET Fair will be held from September 15 to 17; the location has not yet been disclosed.
The award ceremony for the winners of the Mangrove School Competition hosted by the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) will be held on September 18.
On September 20, there will be a “60 Years of Education” documentary. Additionally, AUTOCAD facilities will be launched at the New Amsterdam, North Ruimveldt, Hope Secondary and Zeeburg Secondary Schools on September 23, 25, 28 and 30, respectively.
An inter-departmental cricket competition will also be held on September 25, and a Spanish spelling bee on September 28.
