Elderly Berbice couple on bail for cocaine trafficking

An elderly Corentyne, Berbice couple was on Friday charged with trafficking 45 grams of cocaine when they appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court.

Charged are Henry Trim, 63, a farmer, and Mahdai Netchandra, 58, both of Number 60 Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
It is alleged that on December 14, 2021, at Number 60 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, they had 45 grams of cocaine in their possession for the purpose of trafficking.  They pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Bail was set at $100,000 for each of them. They will make their next court appearance on February 9, 2022, at the Number 51 Magistrate’s Court.
On the day in question, Police ranks conducted a search exercise in the Corentyne area for narcotics, guns, and ammunition. While doing so, they went to the couple’s home where they met Netchandra.
In the presence of the Police, the woman gave her husband a transparent glass bottle after which he ran into the house and threw the bottle into some bushes at the back of their yard. Police retrieved the bottle and cocaine was found inside.
The couple was told of the offence committed and cautioned during which Trim admitted to owning the drug. Both of them were arrested and escorted to the Number 51 Police Station where the drug was weighed in their presence. (G1)
