Elderly man beaten, robbed during home invasion

An 82-year-old man, suspected to have been badly beaten and robbed by unknown perpetrators, was found unconscious at his Ann’s Grove home by relatives.

Beaten and robbed: Leroy Peters

According to information received, Leroy Peters, also known as “John Wayne”, was found in an unconscious state in a pool of blood by his 10-year-old son and villagers on Thursday afternoon.
Family members suspect that the incident occurred sometime between Tuesday evening and Thursday morning.
His eldest son, Leroy Smith, detailed that he was making a routine visit to his father’s house when he saw a large crowd at the man’s property. It was at that time that he was made aware of the fact that something was wrong.
The elderly man was discovered just five minutes prior and based on evidence, the house was ransacked.
After the startling discovery, the injured Peters was picked up and rushed to a city hospital, where he was given medical attention and underwent an emergency surgery on Thursday evening.
Because of the extent of his injuries, he is scheduled to undergo other surgeries.
Smith told Guyana Times that his father is a citizen of the United States and lived alone. At that time, no one was arrested, but Police are continuing their investigations.
Peters was still in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a private facility. He was described as an able-bodied person.
“The Police are still continuing their investigations. He is still in a serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit at a private city hospital. Nobody has been arrested as yet but I have been given the assurance by senior Police operatives that they will get to the bottom of it. He lived alone so the son just went to visit as usual. He’s pretty agile. He moves around and is able bodied,” the son related.
Family members are calling on persons within the community to report any information surrounding the incident that may lead to the apprehension of the perpetrators.
