An elderly man who was found in possession of an illegal firearm and matching ammunition for his “protection” over the weekend has been remanded to prison.
Gordon Williams called “Monkey Harry”, 62-year-old resident of Lot 12 Perseverance, Essequibo Coast, was charged with the offences of “Possession of firearm without licence” and “Possession of Ammunition without licence” Contrary to section 16 (2) (a) of the Firearm Act, Chapter 16:05. The Defendant appeared at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday before Magistrate Ravendra Mohabir, who read both charges to him. Williams pleaded not guilty to the two charges and was remanded to prison. The cases have been adjourned until July 16, 2026. On Saturday, police ranks from Regional Division #2 (Pomeroon-Supenaam) discovered the weapon at Williams’ residence.

The officers had gone to the man’s home and conducted a search during which something suspicious was observed in the ceiling light fixture in one of the bedrooms. Upon closer examination, a white T-shirt was found with a .45 Colt pistol along with one (1) magazine containing seven live matching .45 rounds of ammunition wrapped inside. Some of the serial number on the weapon was filed out. Questioned about the firearm, the suspect admitted to ownership and told the police, “me get robbed three times, mi get it for my protection”. Nevertheless, the man was arrested and subsequently charged.
